The work of Tai Chiem, this PSP2 render takes advantage of a flexible OLED display that can be rolled around the main electronics core but, when charged, automatically stiffens with minimal bezel surround. 
On either end, stereo speakers also do duty as a jog-wheel and camera control, while Cheim has answered many PSP owners’ demands and fitted two joysticks to his concept.  When you’re finished, wrap it all up and you’re left with a mighty portable little gaming device.



Okay, so the PSP12 is unlikely to look like this, never mind the second-generation, but considering how bland Sony’s PSP-3000 refresh was it’s no surprise that designers are putting their minds to tweaking up something far better.  Best of all, every one of the aspects involved is at some level of production feasibility; the large rollable color OLED display may be a bit tricky to find right now, but not so in a few years time.

Rollable transparent OLED



OLEDs can be made flexible, or transparent. In the future we might see an OLED displays that is actually rollable. So maybe you could just roll it when you want to watch some TV, and then remove it when not needed. Or perhaps the OLEDs will be so thin and transparent that they will just be invisible when not in use - you'll just see the bare wall, but when lit up, it'll display your TV picture. 






Nothing says "future" quite like a rollable display. Today Sony's giving us a glimpse into what will one day be with its 80µm-thick organic TFT-driven OLED display. The 4.1-inch display integrates Sony organic thin-film transistors and OLED technology onto a flexible 20µm substrate lacking any rigid driver IC chips. As such it can be wrapped around a cylinder with a 4-mm minimum radius. Display specs include a 432 x 240 pixel resolution (121ppi) supporting 16M colors while exceeding 100nits brightness and a 1,000:1 contrast. It's still research, but it's clearly advancing towards product... someday. See it in action after the break.

 The new 15-inch OLED TV from LG will go on sale on the European market in May, and summer he will appear in America.    Model 15EL9500 will provide 10 000 000:1 contrast and response time of 0.001 ms.

The LG 15EL9500 will be the largest OLED screen available for UK homes and features an exceptionally thin 3mm frame. With no backlight, LG claims it should be able to deliver deeper blacks and it's also water-resistant, so it can be mounted in the bathroom.

Sony's XEL-1

Sony's XEL-1

The world's first OLED TV was Sony's XEL-1 back in December 2007. The XEL-1 was actually more of a technology prototype than a commercial set - it's a small TV (11"), expensive (around 2,500$) and was only produced in small quantities. The picture quality, colors and contrast were great.

Thinness: Proposes new TV form factor measuring approximately 3mm thinness (at its thinnest point)

As OLEDs are light-emitting, there is no need for a separate light source such as a backlight system. Sony's "Organic Panel" consists of an organic material layer of just several hundred nanometers thickness, with two extremely thin glass panels aligned on either side of the organic material layer. This realizes a new TV form factor measuring approximately 3mm at its thinnest point.

High contrast: Reproduces realistic images using exquisite shades of black and flexible control of color tone and gradation

With its light-emitting structure, the OLED display can prevent light emission when reproducing shades of black, enabling "XEL-1" to reproduce very deep blacks (contrast ratio 1,000,000:1). Furthermore, XEL-1 can control all the phases of light emission from zero to peak brightness, generating color expression and subtleties conventional displays cannot match.

High peak brightness: Faithfully reproduces picture glow

"Super Top Emission," a technology unique to Sony and incorporated in its "Organic Panel" has a high aperture ratio which allows for efficient light emission from the organic materials, realizing high peak brightness. This enables "XEL-1" to faithfully reproduce light flow such as reflections of sun light or camera flashlights through the image reproduced on the display.

Excellent color reproduction: Delivers pure and vivid colors in both dark and bright images

In order to use OLED to generate the full spectrum of Sony's TV color requirements, Sony developed its own proprietary organic materials, with bright coloration. In addition, the micro-cavity structure of "Super Top Emission" and the color extracting technology within its embedded color filter enable "XEL-1" to reproduce natural colors beautifully. As a result, the fresh colors of ripe fruit and shades of deep cobalt blue can be stunningly reproduced. The "Organic Panel" can also sustain its color reproduction capability in scenes of diminished brightness, enabling "XEL-1" to faithfully recreate even dark movie scenes using the colors that were originally intended.

Rapid response time: Smoothly reproduces fast moving images such as sports scenes

Since OLED can spontaneously turn the light emitted from the organic material layer on and off, OLED is capable of very rapid response times. Newly developed OLED drive circuits enable "XEL-1" to reproduce fast moving images such as sports scenes smoothly and naturally.

Low power consumption



OLED does not require a separate light source due to its light-emitting structure, therefore it can be powered using very low voltages. This means that OLED TVs consume extremely low levels of power compared with other display devices. The power consumption of "XEL-1" is as low as 45W.'

LG's 55 OLED TV

LG's 55 OLED TV

In December 2011 LG officially announced their first real OLED TV, the 55" 55EM9600. This is a Full-HD panel that features 100,000,000:1 contrast ratio and fast response time (1,000 times faster than LCD according to LG). The panel is only 4mm thick, and the whole TV weighs just 7.5Kg.





The OLED-TV is razor-thin with a 4 mm design and an extremely slim bezel. LG also boasts a 100,00,000:1 contrast ratio and extremely fast response time. It weighs 7,5 kilograms.


LG confirms that they will be using the Cinema 3D system with passive 3D glasses. We still need to confirm the resolution.


The OLED-TV looks amazing with vivid colors, extremely deep black levels and pretty much perfect viewing angles. We will publish a hands-on article later on. For more real-life picture see this article.


LG is using white OLED with color filters. LG says that they use a 4-color pixels and a color refiner. Pixels contain RGBW (red, green, blue, white) subpixels. The color refiner is said to ensure color consistency from wider viewing angles. With these systems LG promises the ”most natural colors on any TV set”

An OLED TV screen uses a new display technology called OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes). OLED televisions are brighter, more efficient, thinner and feature better refresh rates and contrast than either LCD or Plasma.


A little bit about the technology

OLEDs are made by placing thin films of organic (carbon based) materials between two conductors. When electrical current is applied, a bright light is emitted. The OLED materials emit light and do not require a backlight (unlike LCDs). Each pixel is a small light-emitting diode, in fact. OLED TV panels offers several advantages over LCDs:







Faster refresh rate, better contrast and better color reproduction
Thickness: the LG's EL9500 for example is just 1.7mm thick. We've seen prototypes of OLED televisions that are merely 0.3mm thick!
Better viewing angle - almost 180 degrees
Greener: OLEDs draw less power, and contain no bad metals
OLED panels can potentially be made flexible and/or transparent...


“Printing OLEDs significantly lowers the cost to manufacture displays, and with Gen 3 materials technology, display manufacturers can see the material lifetimes and performance required for commercialization,” said William Feehery, global business director -- DuPont OLED Displays. “With lifetime five times better than just two years ago, these new materials will allow solution OLEDs to be used in mobile displays, and also to begin to penetrate the television and general lighting markets at a lower cost than today's evaporated OLED technology.”
