Fastest graphics card on Earth

NVIDIA has launched its latest graphics card, the GeForce GTX 690, with twin Kepler cores making it the world’s fastest, at least for the moment. The GPU company hasn’t wasted the opportunity to make
the GeForce GTX 690 look the part, either, with superlatives galore: a trivalent chromium-plated aluminum frame, thixomolded magnesium alloy fan housing, and dual vapor chambers with a nickel-plated finstack

The lid has been lifted on the Nvidia GeForce GTX 690. It's undoubtedly the fastest graphics card on planet. And it's priced at an utterly offensive $1,000.

That means that in the UK buyers should be looking at roughly £700 - still a whopping amount - but UK enthusiasts are actually going to have to pay £830 for this dual-GPU monster.

The thing is, the RS 4.0 has some seriously high end hardware. And I'm not sure you can say the same of the GTX 690. It's based on a pair of GTX 680 chips in tag teaming SLI configuration. The GTX 680 is the fastest single GPU you can buy, so a pair of them makes this very likely the quickest dual-GPU board on the market.

There’s NVIDIA Surround support, and a new 10-phase, heavy-duty power supply with a 10-layer, 2oz copper printed circuit board and a center-mounted axial fan with optimized fin pitch and air entry angles. Finally, the company has used low-profile components along with ducted baseplate channels “for unobstructed airflow, minimizing turbulence and improving acoustic quality.”

Rollable transparent OLED

OLEDs can be made flexible, or transparent. In the future we might see an OLED displays that is actually rollable. So maybe you could just roll it when you want to watch some TV, and then remove it when not needed. Or perhaps the OLEDs will be so thin and transparent that they will just be invisible when not in use - you'll just see the bare wall, but when lit up, it'll display your TV picture.

Nothing says "future" quite like a rollable display. Today Sony's giving us a glimpse into what will one day be with its 80µm-thick organic TFT-driven OLED display. The 4.1-inch display integrates Sony organic thin-film transistors and OLED technology onto a flexible 20µm substrate lacking any rigid driver IC chips. As such it can be wrapped around a cylinder with a 4-mm minimum radius. Display specs include a 432 x 240 pixel resolution (121ppi) supporting 16M colors while exceeding 100nits brightness and a 1,000:1 contrast. It's still research, but it's clearly advancing towards product... someday. See it in action after the break.

Laser Projection Keyboard

The touch keyboards we use today have improved significantly over what we had to deal with on first generation smartphones. Having larger displays also helps a great deal as the keyboards can be larger. But even so, touchscreen typing can be a chore, especially for those of us with big fingers.

Elecom has decided to offer up a solution to the problem by offering a new laser projection keyboard for both Android and iOS devices.

Laser projection keyboards aren’t a new idea, and offer users access to a full-sized QWERTY keyboard on any flat surface. But Elecom improves on the idea by placing the projection and sensor system in a rechargeable, wireless unit that connects to your phone or tablet via Bluetooth. What you have is a device that will easily fit in a bag and can be used with the flick of a switch.

Elecom’s projection type keyboard (named TK-PBL042BK) projects a red keyboard on to a surface with a key pitch of 19mm. It has 3 sensitivity settings and the ability to adjust brightness in order to save power. There’s also a mouse mode allowing you to use the system just like a mouse and move a cursor around the screen.

As for how fast you can type, it’s pretty impressive at 350 characters per minute. Range is also good with the unit still functioning several meters away from your smartphone or tablet. That could come in handy if your device is plugged in for presentations, but you want to type as you talk from distance.
The Elecom TK-PBL042BK is listed as just “Shipping soon” at the moment and will cost around $348. Clearly laser projection keyboard tech isn’t cheap, but if it works well and you do a lot of typing then it might be a worthwhile investment.
