BlackBerry Curve 9220 Plans: Globe versus Smart

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 09 Januari 2013 0 komentar
G Globe Telecom and Smart Communications are offerings RIM's entry level BlackBerry Cure 9220 on low cost plans. The BlackBerry Cure 9220 is the entry level gateway to BlackBerry services.

Globe's offering gives you the phone for free, at Plan 499 plus at least one BlackBerry add-on. If you select the cheapest add-on which is unlimited BlackBerry Messaging (BBM), that is a Php99 add-on, for a total monthly bill of Php598. The phone is free, subject to a 24 month lock-in.

If you are thinking of adding on BlackBerry Social or the full set of BlackBerry Services, that will comes out to Php799 or Php1,098. If this is what you prefer, it would be best to apply for a BlackBerry at Plan 999 instead. You get the higher end BlackBerry Cure 9320,

At first glance, Smart Communications All-In Plan 500 is not as inviting. The phone is not free. You pay Php950 for the phone. Also you are locked-in for a longer period of 30 months.

However, the Smart All-in-Plan allows you to consume the Php500 monthly allocation for BlackBerry Services. If you sign up for a BBM only package, you get unlimited BBM plus Php401 consumable for Php500 per month. For BlackBerry Social (unlimited Facebook, Twitter and BBM) you pay just Php500 a month, with Php200 consumable. If you sign up for the full BlackBerry service (unlimited Internet, email, Facebook, Twitter and BBM) you pay Php599 a month.

Basically, if you are looking for a low cost BBM package, Globe's offering is a good choice. If you want to use a BlackBerry primarily or exclusively for data, the Smart offering may entice you more.

August 2012 Smartphone Buyers Guide

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
In recommending a phone we are looking for phone that will remain current for two years. Good hardware without decent operating support will satisfy the buyer today, only to disappoint later. August 2012 puts a buyer in a period of transition. We expect to see the new Apple iPhone by September, the new Windows Phone 8 devices (Windows Phone 7 devices are not upgradeable to Windows Phone 8) coming out in September to October, one or more new Google Nexus Phones before the end of the year and a new set of BlackBerry 10 devices, early next year.

The phone which you can buy right now without being  Right now it is made up of Android phones. Only Android phones which are running Android 4.x or have commitments updates to Android 4.x are included. While most apps are compatible with Android 2.2 or later, we are looking for phones which will serve you well for two years, and over time more and more apps will require Android 4.x.

If you are looking for the most advanced handsets in the market, they are three good  options right now. The Samsung Galaxy S III, the HTC One X and the Samsung Galaxy Note.

1. Samsung Galaxy S III (Php30,500 to Php32,900)

Pros. The Samsung Galaxy S III is the best smartphone in the world right now, bar none. With a large 4.8-inch HD display (720 x 1280), quad-core processor, 16 GB of storage of user expandable storage and a excellent 8 MP camera, it has the new and advance written all over. While official SD card support is limited to 32 GB, I tested a 64 GB SanDisk Class 10 MicroSD card on a Samsung Galaxy S III, and it works.

Cons. It is expensive, with a street prices ranging from Php30,500 to Php32,900, with an official warranty.

Postpaid options. This phone is available postpaid from both Globe Telecom and Smart Communications.

2. HTC One X (Php26,500 to Php29,900).

Pros. The specifications of HTC One X closely match the Galaxy S III and has more internal storage out of the box (32 GB), while being significantly cheaper than the Galaxy S III.  The biggest draw of the HTC One X is the 12-core Nvidia graphics processor can display amazing console like effects on Nvidia optimized games. While it is outclassed by the Samsung Galaxy S III, HTC is making some optimization tweaks in its Sense 4.1 ROM designed to take the performance crown back from Samsung.

Cons. Specifications are a close match the Samsung Galaxy S III but it falls a bit behind in almost every category. The 32 GB of storage is not user expandable.

Postpaid options. This phone is available from Smart Communications.

3. Samsung Galaxy Note - (Php26,000 to Php29,900)

Pros. This massive 5.3-inch HD (800 x 1280) phone tablet has been a success, and Samsung is expected to announce its replacement before the end of the month. Still with the price up to 10K lower than its original price, and software updates, this 2011 model still looks like a great option today.

The large display bundled stylus, is the main reason for selecting this phone.

Cons. It is big but that is the main reason people buy it.

Postpaid options. This phone is available postpaid from both Globe Telecom and Smart Communications.

There are a lot 2011 flagship phones available at the 18K-24K price range, but given the Android 18-month support policy newer models have a better chances of long term support and our recommendations take this into account.

4. Samsung Galaxy Nexus - The only phone on our list which we recommend going to the grey market for (Php17,500 to Php30,000).

Pros. This is the Google phone, and is the first to get the latest software. It runs pure Google Android, not weighed down by additional OEM installed software. The device has a 4.65-inch HD (729 x 1280) display with on screen keys. This phone is a Smart Communications exclusive, and it still cost a heft Php30,000 from Smart, but in the grey market you can get it for Php17,500. Buying from the grey market means you get a service warranty, which means you get free repair services during the warranty period but you pay for any parts used. This normally saves you about 10% of the price of a phone with an official warranty. For a 10% price difference we recommend a unit with a official parts and service warranty.  In the case of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus you save a 40% of the price, and the price gap makes it worth getting this phone on the grey market.

Cons. Expensive with an official warranty.

Postpaid options. This phone is available from Smart Communications.

5. Sony Xperia P - (Php17,990 to Php22,990)

Pros. We have seen the price of this phone drop every month from its suggested retail price of Php22,990, to now as low as Php17,990. If you can get it at that price, it really is a sweet deal.

This phone sports a nice 4-inch qHD (540 x 960) display, 16 GB of internal storage and a good 8 MP camera. Its dual core NovaThor based chipset cannot match the higher price phones on this list in terms of speed, but it is fast enough so most users wont notice. The 4-inch display is looking small these days, but is decent enough for the asking price. If you are okay with the 4-inch display, it is a good value for money option. Sony has done the best job in supporting their 2011 units with upgrades to Android 4.0, so we do expect they will do the same for 2012 handsets next year.

Cons. It has a small 1305 mAh battery, which is smaller than the 1500 mAh batteries found in mid-level phones. The other top 4 phones on this list have 1650 mAh to 2500 mAh batteries. The phone still runs on Android 2.3, but a update to Android 4.x is on the way.

6. Sony Xperia Sola - (Php13,500 to Php16,990)

Pros. This phone sports a smaller, lower resolution, 3.7-inch WVGA (480 x 854) display a compared to rhe the Xperia P. It also has less RAM than the Xperia P and video capture is limited to 720p (the first five phones on this list can do 720p video capture) and has no front camera. But it has the same dual core processor and graphics as the Xperia P. Its 8 GB of internal storage is expandable to 40 GB via a Micro SD card which can give the Xperia Sola more storage than the Xperia P. Overall this makes it a great value for money option.

Cons. It has a small 1320 mAh battery. Still runs on Android 2.3, but a update to Android 4.x is on the way.

7. Sony Xperia U - (Php11,600 to Php13,990)

Pros. Gives dual core power at a low price. The Sony Xperia U has similar specification to the Xperia Sola with a smaller 3.5-inch display.

Cons. It has the Same small battery as the Xperia U. For many the major deal breaker is the 8 GB of internal storage (6 GB user available), which is not expandable. Still, 6 GB is not bad. Two gigabytes is available for apps and 4 GB for your music, pictures, documents and other files. It is not user expandable. One gigabyte is good for 200 or more MP3's. Some games can eat up a whole gigabyte. Gamers have to select between having more games installed and having less processing and graphics power at this price range.

For those who need a phone at this price range wanting more storage and longer battery life the Sony Xperia Neo L or HTC One V would be better options.

8. Lenovo P700  (Php10,999)

Pros. Most dual SIM phones are only good choices for those who want a dual SIM device. The Lenovo P700 is a good choice whether or not you want a dual SIM phone. This phone comes with a large 4-inch WVGA (480 x 800) display,  dual SIM capability and 4 GB of internal storage expandable via MicroSD card. It comes with a even larger 2500 mAh battery, one of the biggest you will find in any smartphone today. Unlike the HTC Desire V, this phone does have a front camera.

Cons. The single core 1GHz and ARM Cortex A-5 processor 512MB of  just enough to run Android 4.0. It is makes has enough power for the average user, but a gamer or power user should look elsewhere. The primary camera has no flash.

With the Sony Mini and Sony Live being all but gone from the market, finding a budget priced phone with a current operating system is pretty much impossible. But I do have to recommend something.

9. LG E400 Optimus L3

Pros. Inexpensive and fast. The 1 GB of internal storage, expandable via MicroSD card will cure the low internal storage problem experienced by budget phone buyers.

Cons. The small 3.2-inch with its low 240 x 320 display resolution wont make anyone really happy.  Comes with Android 2.3, Gingerbread, out of the box, and wont be getting updated.

Running Balance in Smart Unlimited Data Plans

Posted by Unknown Minggu, 30 Desember 2012 0 komentar
Question from a reader:

Hi,i am subscribed to unli data plan 2000. When i checked my bill via sms, it says current balance 0.00, previous balance 0.00, running balance 431.02, credit limit 8000. What is runnning balance? Is this an additional charge? Thanks

The running balance is not an additional charge. It is a computation of your monthly usage, and it included in the running balance the free SMS and minutes.

For example, with your plan, Smart Unli Data Plan 2000. The plan comes with:

- 150 minutes of calls to all networks
- 200 minutes of SMS to all networks

For usage beyond these limits you will be charged as follows:

- For calls beyond 150 minutes, Php5.09 for calls within the Smart network and Php6.11 for calls to other networks
- Php0.51 for SMS exceed 200.
- MMS and IDD charges

If in the current month you used

100 minutes of calls, 50 minutes to Smart and 50 minutes to other networks and sent out 300 SMS you running balance would look like this:

-50 minutes x Php5.09 = Php254.5
-50 minutes x Php6.11 = Php306
- 300 SMS x 0.51 = Php156

TOTAL ("running balance") = Php716.5

You will only pay a portion of this:

-100 minutes of calls LESS 150 free minutes = Php0
-300 SMS - 200 SMS = 100 SMS. 100 SMS x Php0.51 per SMS = Php51

So in this example:

- Running balance = Php716.5
- Charges over free usage = Php51
- Monthly bill = Php2051

I hope this helps.

Globe Telecom offers the Apple iPad 4 WiFi + Cellular at a subsidized price

Globe Telecom is offering the Apple iPad 4 "Cellular" model at carrier subsidized prizes:

  • 16 GB - Php21,300
  • 32 GB - Php25,290
  • 64 GB - Php29,990

The prices are Php8,690 to Php10.000 less than the Apple suggested retail price.

To avail of the subsidized prices you have to obtain the device bundled with a "Plan 999", unlimited data plan with a two year contract. While this represents a 24K investment over two years. if you factor in the discount on the device, it is like getting an unlimited data plan for about Php636 a month or less. If you are planning to get the HSPA/LTE version of the iPad mini, this is probably the best way to go. Please note, the Tatoo Plan 999 is not an LTE plan.

A Closer Look at the Windows Phone 8X by HTC

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 22 Desember 2012 0 komentar
Microsoft is placing a lot of its hopes on Windows Phone 8, and the phone that they are expecting to take the Windows Phone platform to new heights is the HTC Windows Phone 8X.  With a suggested retail price of Php26,550, and a street price of Php24,150 it competes directly with the newly launched Google Nexus 4. On the Smart network, the HTC Windows Phone 8X also has to compete with the Apple iPhone 5 and the LTE enabled Sony Xperia V, both of which will actually cost a subscriber less on Data Plan 2000.

The HTC Windows Phone 8X specifications are the same as the the Sony Xperia V in two key aspects. Both of which have a 4.3-inch HD (720 x 1280), a dual core Qualcomm Krait processor and 1 GB of RAM. The other specifications are typical for the class with 16 GB of non-expandable storage, a 8 MP camera, 1800 mAh battery.

The specifications of the HTC Windows Phone 8X indicate that it has an LTE chip, however, the version carried by Smart is not marketed as an LTE phone. It would seem that he local versions of the HTC WIndows Phone 8X either does not have an LTE chip or does not have an LTE chip compatible  with the Smart network. This aspect is where it is overshadowed by the Sony Xperia V which is sold as a LTE enabled phone.

This also make it less desirable than the Apple iPhone 5, which while it does not come with LTE enabled, phones already in the market are likely to get LTE enabled once Apple accredits the local networks.

Compared to the Google Nexus 4, the Windows Phone 8X has a smaller display and a less powerful processor. The Google Nexus 4 comes with a 4.7-inch HD display and a quad core qualcomm krait processor.

Appearance wise, the bezel seems a bit larger than it should be, and it is actually a few millimeters wider and taller than other HTC Phones with a 4.3-inch display. and at 10.1 mm is not particularly thin. All-in all, in terms of hardware, the HTC Windows Phone 8X does not stand out from the Android phones in the market and the iPhone.

HTC Windows Phone 8X does not have the hardware to influence Android and iOS users to switch to the Windows Phone platform and is not priced low enough to make that a consideration for migration.  So what will have to sell the HTC Windows Phone 8X is Windows, and local marketing for Windows Phone 8 seems non-existant.

This is a bit of a shane since Filipino's are heavy Facebook users, and the Windows Phone 8 platform has the best Facebook integration of any mobile operating platform. HTC Philippines and smart should have marketed this as "the" Facebook phone. Instead, as it is right now, it looks like it is left to the Nokia Lumia 920 to generate some buzz around the Windows Phone platform.

    Just how important is LTE?

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 13 Desember 2012 0 komentar
One question in consumers minds these days is how important is LTE? The answer depends on what network you are on. If you are on Sun, LTE technology will be irrelevant to you for the foreseeable future. On Globe, LTE is now available in some areas in Makati City and I don't expect it to have significantly wider coverage until Q2 2013, and that is a bit of speculation on part. Globe is about 70% done with its US$700,000,000 network upgrade, but this upgrade is mainly a HSPA+ network upgrade, with an LTE scalable infrastructure. LTE "scalable", meaning a wide LTE roll-out is something to be covered in a future upgrade rather than right now. Whether Globe decides to widely roll out LTE is something that remains to be seen.

On the Smart network, it is a different story. The images below show Smart LTE covered areas. You decide if LTE technology is worth it on the Smart network (click on images for a larger image).

If you ask me, LTE is relevant on the Smart network today.

Google Nexus 4 coming to Smart at Data Plan 1500

    Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
The Google Nexus 4 is coming to Smart Communications, at free Data Plan 1500 for with a 30 month contract. This plan comes with unlimited data, 60 minutes of calls and 120 SMS to all networks. The phone is also available free at Data Plan 2000 with a 24 month lock-in. This plan comes with unlimited data, 150 minutes of calls and 200 SMS to all networks.

As for the phone itself, the Nexus comes into the Philippines at a mid-level offering but it is the most powerful smartphone in the country right now.

Sitting behind the 4.7-inch (720 x 1280) display is a 1.5 GHz quad-core Krait backed by Adreno 320 graphics and 2 GB of RAM. So if power is what you want, this is the phone to get.

Unfortunately, the Google Nexus 4 is a mid-level offering, and to cut the cost, LTE is disabled on this phone. It does have an LTE modem. The Qualcomm S4 chipset on the Nexus 4 has a Qualcomm WTR1605L seven-band 4G LTE modem, inside. But LG did not include a signal amplifier and filter which are need in order for the LTE modem to work well. The LTE version of the Google Nexus 4 is the LG Optimus G.

Love the phone, but without LTE, it is a no go for me. Smart does have a very interesting phone at Plan 1500 on promo right now, the Sony Xperia V. Still this is basically half as powerful as the Google Nexus 4.

I am not sure if the model being offered at Data Plan 1500 is the 8 GB or 16 GB model. No work on pre-paid pricing either. I will try to find out tomorrow night at the SMART Midnight Christmas Rush.

You can pre-order your Nexus 4 at the SMART Midnight Christmas Rush, and the phone will be released starting December 18, 2012.

Globe and Smart iPhone 5 LTE issue

    Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
I was a bit surprised when Smart Communications announced a pair of LTE enabled handsets, the Sony Xperia V and ZTE T82, and the Apple iPhone 5 was not included. Two days later Globe Telecom announced it first LTE handset, the Huawei Ascend P1 LTE and mentioned that it would be releasing the ZTE T82 and Samsung Galaxy S III LTE soon. Again, no mention of LTE on the iPhone 5. Perplexed, I reached out to Abe Olandres (aka Yugatech) on Twitter, and got the answer.

So this is the scoop. Globe Telecom and Smart Communications cannot decide whether or not to enable LTE on an iPhone 5. Apple will conduct its own tests on an LTE network and will be the one to decide whether or not to enable LTE services on iPhones and iPads for customers of that company.

The Apple iPhone 5 will ship with LTE disabled, and if Apple certifies a network, than it will enable LTE on iPhones on the network with a software update. So basically, Apple will be the one to decide, when and if Globe or Smart will be offering LTE enabled iPhone 5's.

A little bit over reaching on Apple's part if you asked me. But that is the way it is.

Globe Telecom announces is first LTE handset

Posted by Unknown Senin, 10 Desember 2012 0 komentar
Two days after Smart Communications announcement of its LTE handset launch on December 21, 2012, Globe Telecom has announced that it is now offering the Huawei Ascend P1 LTE.

The Huawei Ascend P1 LTE is available for free at Globe Unli Surf 1799. This plan comes unlimited data, P800 monthly consumable, and three (3) call and text freebies that can be change monthly. The  Huawei Ascend P1 LTE is also offered at at Unli Surf 999 plus P500 a month for the handset, or Php1,499 (but you are much better off at Plan 1799).

A prepaid kit for the Huawei Ascend P1 LTE is also available at P21,000.

The Huawei Ascend P1 LTE is an Android phone with a 4.3-inch qHD (540 x 960) display. It is powered by a 1.5GH dual core processor backed by 1GB RAM. Internal storage is just 4 GB, but is expandable up to 32 GB via a MicroSD card. The battery powering the phone is a 1800 mAh unit. All in all, it is very decent phone for the Php21,000 asking price.

Globe is promising that it LTE peak speeds will be up to 60 Mbps for outdoor coverage and 30 Mbps for deployments inside buildings.  Globe has also promised it will launch other LTE handsets, including an LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy S III.

Apple iPhone 5 v. Sony Xperia V @ Smart Communications

Posted by Unknown Minggu, 09 Desember 2012 0 komentar
Smart Communications has brought us most interesting flagship phones these year. Starting with the Samsung Galaxy S III at the middle of the year, Smart followed up with the HTC One X, Nokia Lumia 900 and the Samsung Galaxy Note II.  In just a few days, Smart will be bring the long awaited Apple iPhone 5. A week after that the smart will bring the relatively unknown Sony Xperia V but which packs LTE connectivity.

The Apple iPhone 5 will have its loyal adherents. For the die hard iPhone user, the specifications do not matter.

The Sony Xperia V on the other hand will have a harder time competing. The standard now for a Android flagship phones is a larger 4.7 to 5.3-inch display, and a quad core processor.

The Applie iPhone 5 run's iOS 6. The Sony Xperia V runs Android 4.0.4, Ice Cream Sansdwich. If you are a die hard iOS user, or set on Android, there is no point reading the rest of this post. If you are open to both, and are looking for a smaller handset continue reading.

Note on the operating system. iOS is the simplest to use. At the same time, it also has fewer features and options. All told, iOS 6 has change very little since 2007 with the most significant improvement coming in 2011, with an Android like notification system and Siri. As for Android 4.x, even if you already owned an Android on Gingerbread, it rather different, and has improved a lot in terms of visual appeal.

So lets move on to the head-to-heas shall we?

    1. Display - 4 inch (640 x 1136) v. 4.3-inch (720 x 1280). The iPhone 5's display is the biggest display we have seen on a iPhone, but it has lost its appeal somewhat. Retina is really meaningless these days when nearly every flagship device has a "retina" display, which had been defined as 300 pixels per inch (ppi) or higher. Apple now labels devices which don't meet the 300 ppi as retina. These days having a ppi of over 300 is common and 4-inches is the standard display for a entry level smartphones.

The display of the Sony Xperia V is also small by todays standards, with even budget Android sporting 4.3-inch displays. The Sony Xperia V's 4.3-inch display sports a HD resolution with a sharper 342 ppi, which is higher than 326i ppi of the iPhone 5. The main weakness of Sony's Bravia powered displays is that they have poorer veiwiing angles.

Which one do I prefer? The Sony Xperia V has a larger sharper display. The iPhone 5 has better viewing angles. Each one has their own set of priorities, but since I view my smartphone head on, I will go with the larger sharper display.

    Winner - Sony Xperia V

    2. Storage 16/32/64 GB versus 8 GB + MicroSD card slot. The Apple iPhone 5 comes in three versions in terms of storage, a 16 GB model, a 32 GB model and a 64 GB model. The Sony Xperia V only comes with 8 GB of internal storage but it can be officially expanded to 40 GB, and while not officially supported can run with 64 GB MicroSD card for up to 80 GB of internal storage. It is much cheaper to get a big 64 GB SD card than to "upgrade" from a 16 GB iPhone 5 to a 64 GB iPhone 5.

    Winner - Sony Xperia V

    3. Camera. Both phones have excellent camera's, which is not a surprise since the sensors for both phones are made by Sony. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with an 8 MP camera, while the Sony Xperia V has a 13 MP camera. The higher megapixels does not translate to better image quality. Both are good, but using GSMArena's image compare tool, it does not look like either one is as good as the camera on the Samsung Galaxy S III.

The iPhone 5 will do a better job doing 1080 video on the primary camera, and its secondary camera can do 720 video. The Xperia V's secondary camera only does VGA video. I will give this round to the iPhone 5.

    Winner - Apple iPhone 5

    4. Power - Dual-core A6 v. Dual Core Kraits. Quad core is the catchy phrase these days, but most quad core phones these days are based on the old ARM Cortex-A9 processor. The dual-core A6 or dual core Krait both use more advance technology so that these dual core offering can match the quad core phones found in the local market in terms of performance.

Both are built on modern technology, the A6 being built on the 32 nm process, and the Krait being built on the even more advance 28 nm process. Neither of these phones can catch the latests quad-core phones, with a quad-core Krait (Google Nexus 4, LG Optimus G and HTC Butterfly), but they are both fast enough to keep you happy for the next two years.

    Winner - Draw

    5. Size. The Apple iPhone 5 is all of 58.6 mm wide and just 7.6 mm thick, making it  comfortable fit on even the smallest hands. Apples square edge design is not the most ergonomic, but a good case should take care of that. The Sony Xperia V is in a different category altogether, being an armored Droid (more on that later). But the Xperia is wider and thicker, at 65 mm and 10.7 mm respectively.

Both are light, with the iPhone 5 weighing in a 112 grams, and the Xperia V weighing in at 120 grams.

    Winner - Apple iPhone 5

    6. Battery life. The Apple iPhone 5 has good battery life (see battery life comparison at this link).   I don't have a test for the Xperia V, and while it should be pretty good, once you turn on the LTE radio, it will not be as good as the iPhone 5.

    Winner - Apple iPhone 5

    7. Radio's. Both phones have LTE Radio's but only the Sony Xperia V comes on a LTE Plan. This effectively makes the Sony Xperia V six times faster in LTE covered areas.

    Winner - Sony Xperia V

*Bonus features. The Sony Xperia V gets additional brownie points for being IP57 certified dust and water resistant. Useful when making phone calls in the rain.

*Deal Breakers? If you need Maps, the Apple iOS6 maps are pretty useless in the Philippines, and Nokia NEAR is not a good replacement. Google Maps for iOS should come out in a bit and solve the problem.  The Apple iPhone 5 still has a physical button, which is not the most durable button in the world.

So, which one do I recommend? If you are data centric, the Sony Xperia V is the better choice on the Smart network. It comes free at Plan 2000 and Plan 1500 with 2.5 GB and 1.5 GB of data (speed slows down after hitting the cap). All you apps that rely on internet connections will run faster in LTE covered areas. While that is limited to Metro Manila for now, since you are in for a two year contract, it makes sense to invest in the future rather than in the past.

If you are call and text centered, Plan 2499 on the iPhone 5 would be better deal for you. This gives you a 32 GB iPhone for free, and comes with more minutes and SMS.

I wont't blame anyone who picks the Apple iPhone 5. It is the nicest iPhone ever. I just don't understand why it is not offered with an LTE Plan. But if I were getting one, I would get the Sony Xperia V. It can trade blows with the iPhone 5 in terms of specifications, but mainly my reason would be with Smart coming out with LTE plans, I have lost interest on anything without an LTE connection.

Unfortunately, Smart is no longer offering early retention, so I will have to wait for a six more months to get an LTE. So for you soon to be new LTE smartphone owners, I will enviously read your feedback.

No LTE for the Apple iPhone 5 in the Philippines?

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 08 Desember 2012 0 komentar

The biggest new feature of the Apple iPhone 5 is LTE support. LTE or Long Term Evolution is the next step in high speed wireless internet connectivity. Smart Communications launched its LTE service in August 2012, and Globe Telecom followed the next month. Both carriers made the service available for data only devices, with no mobile phone LTE plans.

When Globe and Smart announced their plans for the Apple iPhone 5, it looked like the local carriers were not yet rolling out LTE plans for phones. Eventually, when the carriers roll out LTE plans, the iPhone 5 would be made available on LTE plans. But with Smart announcing LTE plans for the Sony Xperia V and the ZTE T82, it looks like the iPhone 5 might not be compatible with Smarts LTE network. After all, why would Smart offer LTE plans and not include a plan for the iPhone 5.

Unfortunately, unlike HSPA where you have a universal standard, LTE technology implementation is fragmented. The iPhone 5 is built in three versions to try to provide support for most carriers. two GSM and one CDMA model. The Philippines uses GSM networks. The two iPhone 5 GSM models are model A1428 which supports LTE Bands 4 and 17 and model A1429 that supports LTE Bands 1, 3, and 5. So the first reason could be that the iPhone 5 does not support the LTE bands that Smart Communications is running on. There are 44, or so, LTE bands or which 7 commonly implemented. The iPhone 5 supports 5 bands.

There other possibility is that LTE technology is not being made available on the iPhone 5 for other reasons.

Whatever the reason, the iPhone 5 will be launching in the Philippines without a LTE plan, and all of a sudden it is start to look like an older model than a cutting edge flagship phone.

Smart Communications is now offering LTE Handsets

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 07 Desember 2012 0 komentar

Smart has added to LTE enabled Android phones in their line-up and offering them on LTE Plans! The phones are the ZTE T82 and the Sony Xperia V.

As for the plans, UnliData Plan 1500 includes 60 minutes of voice calls and 120 SMS to all networks, with 1.5GB of data. UnliData 2000 includes 150 minutes of voice calls and 200 SMS to all networks, with 2.5GB of data. Verified with Smart's CS. After hitting the data cap, speed will be slowed down.

Right now, you should only really be considering the Sony Xperia V which is being offered on a promo free at Data Plan 1500 & UnliData Plan 2000 until January 30, 2013. After that you will have to add Php6,500 to get the phone free at UnliData Plan 1500. The ZTE T82 is offered free at Data Plan 1500 & Data Plan 2000 which is its regular price.

So for now, lets just look at the Sony Xperia V.

The Sony Xperia V is powered by Android 4.04 Ice Cream Sandwich. It has a 4.3-inch display with a HD resolution (720 x 1280).  Inside is a dual-core 1.5GHz 28 nm Krait processor which can pretty much keep up, and sometimes out perform, the quad core Nvidia Tegra 3 (HTC One X) and Samsung Exynos 4 (Samsung Galaxy S III). The phone only comes with 8 GB of internal storage, but that is expandable vai a MicroSD card slot. The phone also packs a 13 MP camera. The 1750 mAh battery on the Sony Xperia V is a bit smaller than I would have liked, but lets see how it performs before laying judgment

You can pre-order the Sony Xperia V at this link. The Sony Xperia V will be launched on December 21, 2012.

Want an Apple iPhone 5? Go Post Paid.

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 06 Desember 2012 0 komentar

If you are reading this, you probably want an iPhone 5 and are on a budget. If money was no object, you would pick you favorite carrier, select the phone that you want, and not bother worrying about value for money. So lets look at value for money.

Paying cash for an iPhone 5 on postpaid plan does not make Sense. You have a heavy cash investment up front, and over two years, you would spend as much as a good postpaid plan anyway. If for example you only use Php500 a month on your phone on postpaid load this is how much an iPhone 5 16 GB would cost over two years.

    Globe iPhone 5 16 GB
    Cash price - Php35,400
    Load @Php500 a month for two years - Php12,000
    Total = Php47,400

So lets look at my favorite Globe post paid options. Plan 1799 will give you unlimited data, Php800 consumable a month and your two year cost is
    Php47,976.

With Smart the situation is similar,

    Smart iPhone 5 16 GB
    Cash price - Php33,600
    Load @Php500 a month for two years - Php12,000
    Total = Php45,600

Data Plan 1500 is a Php46,000 commitment over two years. But the situation is not a clear cut as with Globe. Php500 a month load versus unlimited data, 60 minutes of calls and 120 SMS. This plan is a little thin on calls and SMS. Still, it is nice to have unli data on a smartphone.

Globe Telecom Apple iPhone 5 Plans and Pricing

    Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

Globe Telecom has released its Apple iPhone 5 pricing. Prepaid Globe will be selling the iPhone 5 at the following prices:

    16 GB - Php35,400
    32 GB - Php40,800
    64 GB - Php46,300

Globe Telecom is also offering post paid plans for the iPhone 5.
    • iPhone 5 16 GB is free at Plan 2499
    • iPhone 5 32 GB is free at Plan 3799
    • iPhone 5 16 GB is free at Plan 5000
All plans are subject to a two year lock in.

My favorite Globe Plan for the iPhone 5 is Plan 1799. Plan 2499  give you the free iPhone 5 16 GB free with a two year commitment of Php59,976. Plans 1799 has a Php4,800 cash component but in the end you will fork out Php47,976. With Unlimited data you voice call and SMS usage should go down,  so the Php800 consumable of Plan 1799 should be enough.
