Was Comet ISON destroyed as it approached the Sun?

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 05 Desember 2013 0 komentar
Comet ISON or commonly also called 'comet of the century' by scientists and astronomers eventually explode when approaching the Sun. The images from NASA spacecraft shows the moment of ISON on Thursday, November 28, 2013 approaching in around the Sun, but the comet was then not show up anymore.
The comet that may put on a spectacular light show during a November date with the Sun, was observed by the Deep Impact mission. The spacecraft has also had close fly-bys of comet's Tempel 1 and Hartley 2 and scientific observations of Garradd. (Picture from: http://www.livescience.com/)
"The possibility of ISON destroyed in that journey," said a solar system researcher, Karl Battams of the U.S. Navy, in the Google video conference as reported by BBC. And Phil Plait, an astronomer and author of Bad Astronomy blog says, "I think the comet does not make it past the Sun."

Despite has the large size, the comet is likely to be destroyed and scattered due to exposure to the Sun's heat. The experts from the European Space Agency (ESA) that monitors the comet movement using Soho Sun satellite had taken the assumption that the comet's death around 21:30 GMT.

Previously, experts had predicted ISON comet likely be burned and broke into pieces as it approaches the Sun. However, some other experts argue, there is the possibility of the comet ISON will survive from the destruction and produce a great fireworks show. When the comet survived on its journey across the Sun, so it can be seen with the naked eye until December, 2013 from the northern hemisphere.

ISON comet was discovered by two Russian astronomers, i.e Vitali Neyski and Artyom Novichonok on September, 2012. Comets are named after the telescope that they use at the International Scientific Optical Network (ISON) and dubbed 'comet of the century'.

Unlike Halley's Comet can be seen from Earth every 75 to 76 years, the hyperbolic comet such as ISON might be visible only once. Because the comet ISON is not in an orbit. This means that the researchers only have one chance to collect scientific data as much as possible from comet ISON. This comet is made of a combination of material allegedly left behind when the formation of the solar system 4.6 billion years ago. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | BBC | SPACE | LIVESCIENCE]

Now China's turn to go to the Moon

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 04 Desember 2013 0 komentar
After some time ago India launched their first spacecraft to Mars, then China also launched their first extraterrestrial lander headed for the Moon on December 2, 2013. Chang'e-3 spacecraft, which is equipped with a Moon rover named Yutu or Jade Rabbit, launched using a Long March 3B rocket from Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwestern Sichuan Province, China, at 1:30 am local time.

The launch of an unmanned spacecraft to the Moon is a major breakthrough in the country's space program. President Xi Jinping said that he wanted China to position themselves as one of space superpowers, and that mission has inspired pride in the growth of China's technological expertise.

If all goes according to plan, Yutu will conduct geological surveys and looking for natural resources after the Chang'e-3 spacecraft landed on the Moon in mid-December.

"The spacecraft has entered in desired orbit," said Zhang Zhenzhong, Xichang Launch Center Director, as quoted by Xinhua news agency.

In 2007, China launched their first Moon orbiter, Chang'e-1. The spacecraft name is taken from the moon goddess in Chinese mythology, Chang'e. The spacecraft was taking pictures of the lunar surface and analyze the spread of its elements.

When the spacecraft is named after the goddess of the Moon, so the Moon rover name is taken from the name of the goddess's pet rabbit, i.e Yutu or Jade Rabbit. The use of names for this Moon rover decided by public vote.

Chinese scientists have discussed the possibility of sending humans to the Moon by 2020. In the space mission last June, three Chinese astronauts spent 15 days in orbit and docking test with the space laboratory, as the preparation of the Chinese desire to create a space station in 2020.

If the Moon mission is a success, China will become the third country to land on the Moon, after the United States and the former Soviet Union. But when compared with the two space superpowers, China's achievements is not nothing. Both America and the former Soviet Union have landed on the Moon over 40 years ago.

At this early stage of China's only aim to land their spacecraft to the Moon, and then release the Moon rover and finally make the spacecraft returns to Earth in 2017. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | REUTERS | XINHUA | SPACE | TJANDRA DEWI | KORAN TEMPO 4421]

India's maiden mission to Mars

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 03 Desember 2013 0 komentar
Indian space mission to Mars enters an advanced stage. Mangalyaan, thus the name of the spacecraft that start the 300 days journey to the Red Planet after the escape of the earth's orbit on Sunday, December 1, 2013.

Mangalyaan will travel as far as 680 million kilometers. And scheduled, the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) that will reach the target on September 24, 2014. Yesterday morning, the space shuttle main engines successfully resuscitated over 20 minutes. With sufficient speed, the plane left the lines on the earth.

"The Earth orbiting phase from Mangalyaan mission has ended. Currently a plane to Mars after circling the Sun about 10 months," said MOM in his Twitter account.

Head of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) K. Radhakrishnan explained, to leave the Earth's orbit operation goes well. Since its launch on November 5, 2013, the spacecraft successfully orbits around the Earth.

Through several stages to leave the Earth's orbit without significant constraint by turning on a number of machines.

All maneuvers successfully, except the fourth on November 11 , 2013. When the engine is experiencing a problem with the fuel and result in Mangalyaan fall into a lower orbit. However, ISRO has planned the possibility of subsequent maneuvers that required by 1,350 kilograms (2,976.24 lbs) of weighing aircraft was to move further.

"There are four times maneuver. The first planned to be done on November 11. Could change 1-2 days dependent on the deviation," said V Koteswara Rao, an ISRO researcher, as quoted from NDTV. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | NDTV | THE RAW STORY]

Scientists succeeded in detecting neutrinos from Outer Space

Posted by Unknown Minggu, 01 Desember 2013 0 komentar
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory, a particle detectors facility that buried in the ice of Antarctica to investigate the matter in the universe managed to find a high-energy particles called neutrinos 28. This is the first strong evidence of the existence of astrophysical neutrinos originating from outer space.
This is the second highest-energy neutrino ever observed. IceCube physicists named it Bert. Twenty-eight events with energies around and above 30 TeV were observed in an all-sky search for high-energy neutrino events with vertices contained in the IceCube neutrino detector. "This is the first indication of the presence of high-energy neutrinos from outside our solar system," said Francis Halzen, the principal investigator of the IceCube and Gregory Breit, Distinguished Professor of Physics at the University of Wisconsin, as reported phys.org on November 22, 2013.

The neutrinos have energy more than one million times that of the original observations in 1987 regarding events supernova occurred in the Large Magellanic Cloud. "It is exciting because we finally managed to see what we have been looking for. This is a new dawn of astronomy," he continued.

Because rarely interact with matter, subatomic particles called massed neutrinos, can carry information about the workings of the phenomena of the highest and the most distant energy in the universe. Billions of neutrinos pass through every square centimeter of Earth every second, but most of it comes from the sun or the earth's atmosphere.

Small neutrino or neutron is the name given by the famous Nobel laureate and German physicist, Wolfgang Pauli. Neutrinos are particles attracted the attention of physicists because of mystique since become one of the basic building universe together with the electron, muon, and tau, are included in a class of particles called leptons. Lepton together with six types of quark particles are forming the basis of all matter in the universe.

Neutrinos difficult to detect and difficult to grasp despite scattered on the face of the Earth since its emergence accompanies exposure to sun to Earth. Every second, there are about 65 billion neutrinos from the Sun passes through an area of one square centimeter on Earth. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | PHYSORG | LIVESCIENCE]
